Àlvar Mestres

Born in Tarragona and based in Barcelona, Àlvar Mestres studied Graphic Design before pursuing Sculpture at Escola Llotja, the historic art school attended by Picasso and Miró. His background in both disciplines has shaped an artistic language in which form, material and spatial balance are central.
His sculptural practice draws inspiration from the natural world — eroded landscapes, geological formations, organic structures and the subtle traces left by time. Rather than reproducing nature, Àlvar interprets its forms, exploring the tension between the organic and the architectural, the imperfect and the deliberate.
Each sculpture is individually shaped by hand, without molds or the potter’s wheel. Working primarily with stoneware, he embraces the unpredictability of clay, allowing irregularities, textures and subtle variations to define the character of each work. Many pieces remain unglazed, exposing the raw, tactile qualities of the material.
Rooted in simplicity and a deep respect for the material, his work explores the relationship between sculpture and space. Through restrained forms and tactile surfaces, Àlvar creates pieces that invite contemplation and establish a quiet yet distinctive presence within their surroundings.
